Calligraphy with Sally Jane
After a hectic weekend up and down the country it was lovely to
take a lil break a Calligraphy workshop in Huddersfield. I’m an artist
in residence at Derby University where I’ve been back in my favourite,
The darkroom! I love printing and seeing the magic of Photography, but
it’s really made me think about the materiality of prints and what we
can add to them. I saw Sally’s wonderful work over on her Instagram. (https://www.instagram.com/sallyjanecalligraphy/ )
is a modern calligrapher based in West Yorkshire. Her work is
contemporary and very beautiful. The venue was Northern Tea House.
After insta-meeting Sally I agreed to do some photos at the workshop. I
really love meeting other women working in business for one, and two I
wanted to learn this craft! I was feeling a little worse for wear after
a late night working on a documentary commission in London, working in
Derby in the week and dotting about over Yorkshire in between. So when I
arrived to the light and bright space, beautifully designed, teapots
for lights, friendly staff, and lovely details. I thought this is just
where I need to be. Dragging a suitcase along in the rain warrants some
treats, a flat white and pastel pink pavlova.
The workshop was
relaxed and friendly. We were upstairs in the function room. It was
hands on and in depth. Sally was a lovely workshop leader. She was
friendly and made everyone feel at ease straight away. Learning some
basics slowly, upstrokes = light and downstrokes = heavier. I was blown
away by how relaxing it was, a very therapeutic art form.
I’m still learning the skill but will definitely carry on with
learning this beautiful lettering. Look out for some new hand made
prints combining the two soon.
